On Failed Systems and Chaos
70My first blog on Hub-pages was called “Shine On”. Hardly anyone read it when I posted it and it received no comments so several months ago when I went on a clean-up mode of my blogs, I removed that one too. I wrote it because I saw much change in our future. That was two years ago. I wrote then, that:
“When that feeling of … “I have nothing to lose” settles in, people will force the status-quo to change. Are we close to such a time? I do not know … but I do see people living in tents all over the United States; they seem to be catching up slowly to the Palestinians living in refugee camps in Lebanon, in terms of living conditions. There is a general distrust in governments around the world. The consolidation of wealth and power by a low percentage of the world’s population is also becoming more visible and unacceptable by a wide majority who are living on food stamps.”
Two years ago, the Middle East and Africa were calm. Well, not calm but as calm as they could be considering the circumstances. The Middle East and Africa are now on the move. Europe, two years ago was a little noisy indeed but now people have gone to the streets from Romania to Greece, to Italy, to France and to Great Britain. There is social uncertainty and discontent all over Asia as well. In North America: Mexico is in chaos, the United States is following Mexico’s case, while as Canadians we think that we are nice people and so there is nothing to worry about here.
The riots in Great Britain were foreseeable: this is just the beginning (or a continuation). The Prime Minister, David Cameron made me laugh today (beside other things, like writing this blog), he’s a funny man. While talking to the press about the riots, he said that: “It’s not about poverty, it’s about culture.” I would like to call him a donkey because he saw no connection between culture and poverty. If you live(d) in slums all your life; if you cannot afford to go to school or learn about things in any significant way, or if you have very little opportunity for self-growth, what sort of culture would you acquire? How would you act or re-act?
I know many parents who have to work long hours to make ends meet and they do not have much time to spend with their kids. Teenagers run loose for many reasons. I know I did, for at least two years straight. It is not because my parents have/had no culture, in fact both of them went to university and became engineers but because my mother got sick with cancer and spend most of her last years in the hospital; my father was either there, at work or sleeping at home. Thus, I was on my own. I did not light any cars or buildings on fire but I did many other things just as bad or maybe even worse.
Our social system is set-up in a self-destructive manner, in my opinion. I had many conversations, with many people on this topic. From reading my pieces of writing posted, one can easily see my frustration with the lack of involvement on the part of many people, in general: voting, community work, etc. I have written several blogs that drill on that issue and I have been quite harsh with my words, perhaps too harsh in some cases.
There are indeed reasons why many people cannot be involved in the world around them, or even be around for their family. I had a heated discussion on several occasions about this and not long ago, I was told that: “If someone chooses not to be involved in the outer world because it takes everything they have to raise their own family, they are not scum!”
I agree in the end and that was a great point. I am not happy about it but I agree. Many people just simply do not have the energy needed to sit and philosophize, or even have the time to go to the park with their children. The outcome though is this: the streets of Manchester and Tottenham on fire, bankers robbing the common man at every turn and distrust amongst all of us reigns. Yes, like David Cameron said, it has to do with culture, behavior, ethics, etc. All those things though, come when one is fed and can think clearly; when one is not drowning in debt and worries: when one is living above the standard of poverty.
The tension is growing. I am no longer saying anything about people being involved or not involved: we all have our own paths, duties, responsibilities and so on. The person who made me understand why not everyone can always be involved in the world around them also presented the problem most clearly by saying that:
"… It's been my experience that no matter who forms the government, nothing ever really changes. We can change our leaders like bed-sheets, and still it is the same. Why is that? Because the real power is held by a long established oligarchy and governments are made up of men who can be corrupted, influenced, or who are just plain too stupid to see -- in which case they don't last long.”
The above problem must get solved, in order to have some sort of functioning societies. Otherwise, we can keep going through rioting, cleaning-up after doing so and beating a little on each other in the process every so often. I do not have a solution except to say that people have to start thinking about our connection to each other and the world around us. Greed and selfishness are counter-productive at this point. Doing something for others might help if that is a possibility ... even a smile can help sometimes and that doesn't cost much of anything.
For now people have austerity measures to look forward to and that in my opinion will only increase the problem as funding is taken away from building infrastructure and from social development. It is as if the world has forgotten what happened when Argentina followed-up with the requests of the IMF a little over a decade ago. The economy completely collapsed. Taking funding away from social welfare is like pouring gasoline on a fire in order to put it out. I am not sure how our "leaders" come to the decisions they do ... it boggles my mind.
I remained frozen at some of David Cameron's words earlier: “There are pockets of our society that are not only broken, but frankly sick it is a complete lack of responsibility in parts of our society, people allowed to feel that the world owes them something.” This comment is infuriating. I guess I'm sick too, send the police over to cure me.
Trace Adkins put it best on an interview last night describing the social situation in the United States and I think this is true all over the world: "... We're talking past each other." Indeed listening to each other might help. Or we could go back to tribalism, that is always an option ... it might do us good: start over again.

Bankers and corporations are earners, not leeches.
Those who expect society to support them are the leeches. I know that, because I used to work with them when I was a liberal.
This is one of your better hubs. You have described the situation very well from your point of view and you have done so in a very reasonable manner. There are many who will agree and many who won't. One thing I have learned is that the only change that you can secure is your own. trying to change others is fruitless mission and the best that can be achieved is change your reaction. Thank you.
"I think you should come-up with some ideas for keeping track of people abusing the welfare system."
I already have. All welfare should be local, where we know exactly who these people are, so we can weed out the lazy leeches.
Hello Mr Happy - every system fails eventually. Maybe it's down to all the frailties to which you refer here. It reminds me of computers; they work well when they're new; then gradually, becoming snagged up with myriad corruption. We're far from perfect, regardless the ism to which we subscribe. Eventually human nature permeates. Now, if I ruled the World, everything would be perfect (for me).
I think we're seeing the end of the cycle, Mr. Happy, and as you said, it's inevitable to some extent. There are a few things we can do to mitigate the situation for ourselves and others. Just hang on to hope; to kindness and generosity of spirit in troubled times; to help our neighbor when we can. That's about the best we can do.
I think our forefathers were tougher and knew how to ride out a bad situation, without publicly agonizing over it. I think that might be a better way; I'm not sure...some situations need to be aired.
I'm sorry but after reading comment after comment from Will Starr, I had to put my 2 cents in.
Mr. Starr, you say bankers are earners not leachers; you fail to point out however, that those same banks in the US managed to LEACH more than 750 billion dollars out of tax payers. Granted much of that has finally been repaid; however, again I point out the fact that the top men at Goldman Sachs changed their status to a "banking institution" in a New York minute so they could qualify to get their hands on some of those billions.
From your comments, I might perchance, wrongly assume you are a man of better than average means and I can empathize with those like yourself, the notion that your taxes are high enough and that others should not expect handouts and should fend for themselves.
I might also remind you Mr. Starr, that without those that sweep your street, wash your car, repair your plumbing, your electrical, those that sweat in the factories to make the nice suits you might be accustomed to wearing, and the countless other jobs they perform for you as well as those that no longer are able to because of outsourcing or layoffs - without THOSE people, YOUR job might not be... period.
There are millions of people hurting out there, good decent people that are down on their luck. There are more of them than there are of you. Not all of them are free loaders, just as not all of you are thieves. Therefore, I ask you, would it be fair enough to say they won't call you all thieves provided you don't stereotype them all as free loaders? In the blink of an eye, you could be one of them.
THE BETTER WAY MAY BE IF U PUT SOME SUB HEADING IN YOUR WRITING WILL MAKE IT ATTRACTIVE TO READ...ELSE GOOD POST
I guess it depends on how far people(middle class who DID help the Not Leech bankers make money) can be pushed, stripped of their years of hard work, and dignity and livelihoods Before pushing back. The middle class are running out of patience with blood suckers, and I don't consider hardworking people who have been stolen from,as leeches by Any stretch. Great hub! Rock on!
The British government might actually be behind those riots - it would only help them to steal more and take more from the citizens in the end. Most folks wouldn't think such things happen - but it happened here with the 911 crime, which I'm positive was manufactured as a profitable pre cursor to the imperialist resource grabs in Arabia.
Mr. Happy, I don't even know what to say. I was never comfortable with either system - socialism or capitalism. My choice to move to Canada is understandable, so I prefer Canada to Russia, but to say that I approve of everything here it would be quite an exaggeration.
The patriotic upbringing and constant talk about how the ills of society should be solved by revolutions did its deed - I am a revolutionary at heart, but peaceful - I don't act on my urges. But things happen, not revolutions, but upheavals...
I am not involved, but I will tell you the reason - I cannot take care of my own life and I feel the approaching burden of responsibility -
If I could, I would have no doubt contributed.
Maybe I will.
You always amaze me with your interest in political matters. I feel that I was overfed in my childhood and youth.
Do people in America really live in tents?
Mr. Happy, I will let you know. I have an idea, but I am not ready to share it. And if it will never be realized, I don't want to talk about it, yet. It has to do with children & education and I know that you have a soft spot for them.
I do find a lot of similarities between you and me. Yes, to understand others is not as easy as it might appear on the surface.
Remember that my stars make me torture people with my tolerance.
I will check out your article and will let you know my opinion.
Mr. Happy, I am in the process of dealing with comments.
If you want to see me "torturing with tolerance", please visit my "Unsung Heroes" again. Before I could answer your comment, I wrote a response to Epigramman - he is a great character, but I felt that I have to express my opinion on over-praise. I cannot take it. You know my reasons. I feel bad, yet, I feel I have to say it because I want nothing but honesty. If I am liked, that is great, if I am read, fantastic, but false praise drives me insane. I know Colin means well - but I cannot take it. I just feel how everyone will disagree with me and disapprove. I tend to, well, I don't always conform.
When I was called "Svetlana is such a good girl" in my childhood - I wanted to scream - "Do you even know me?"
It is my fault, of course, I should speak up the time I think things go in the wrong direction, but I don't. Then resentment grows out of proportion and I go off like a bomb. He is a sweet character, but... I guess I am not.
You know I have a sign at home (I bought it a few years back at some store selling funny stuff) "I only look sweet and innocent." I don't even look the part.
Mr. Happy, I agree with every word you’ve written in this hub. Unfortunately POWER corrupts people. Only the best of the best leaders are able to stay open-minded, objective, fair and honest in a position of power. Yes, nothing has changed. The famous King Solomon said it all (Ecclesiastes 1:9-10): “The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? It hath been already of old time, which was before us.”
So what are we to do? I try to live my life in my little world as best as I can and I really don’t get ‘involved’ anymore. To be honest, I don’t even read newspapers anymore - only the headlines and what is most important to know. If I skip a news bulletin or two, I spare myself a lot of anger. I had my time. I had fought some important fights, and I am so glad to know there will always be fighters against corruption and bad government. Take care!

The riots are due to governments inevitably running out of taxpayer funds as demand exceeds tax revenue. The blood supply is drying up, and the leeches are angry.
Liberals want more taxation (the leeches vote for liberals!), while the right wants the leeches to learn to fend for themselves.
