My Thoughts VIII: On Numbers

54

By Mr. Happy

Note: I am not sure when I wrote the following but it must have been within the last year or so (maybe) because I mentioned another writer from Hub-pages whom I have known for about that time ... lol I am very bad with numbers and now that I look at this piece of writing, I think it was intended to be a blog which I never posted. Again just some thoughts written at some point:

"I don’t understand numbers much. I read about other people writing on Hub-pages and how they get hundreds or even thousands of views per day; my mind does not fully comprehend that. It gets stuck in the numbers like it was some yoga move in which it remained paralyzed.

Of course, I cannot understand hundreds of views per day … not from my viewpoint. If I get twenty views in a day, I’m doing the Macarena around the room:

“Ohh, ya! Twenty views. See, that!? That’s twenty people that read what I wrote! No wait, fuck … I clicked on it at least five times or so myself … so, who cares: I still got at least fifteen views, or thirteen – better than nothing.” Ego’s flying!

It’s a bloody struggle to look at the numbers. “Why am I even looking at the numbers” … that is always the question if I catch myself looking at Hub-pages numbers. “Do I care? Does it even make a difference?”

No it does not make a difference. I have not changed anything regarding my attitude towards writing since I have joined Hub-pages, almost two years ago: remain honest. Perhaps the only thing that I like to change is my ability to get my point across. I have been too vague at least a few times in what I was saying and I have had unhappy people. Not even Mr. Happy can keep everyone happy.

Who said I was trying to keep people happy … I am not. I try at times to make people happy, that is true but to keep someone happy – that sounds like a trance, I am no longer into trance although I do listen to it once in a while still. I am thinking of DJ Tiesto here.

Maybe that is why I don’t like numbers: they mean nothing to me. You add one to another one, all of a sudden you have two: from plural to singular. Why? Because two looks like one or one on top of one: either way it’s one but there were two: one plus one. Numbers morph … I don’t trust them; not after the way I see them change around.

I really have nothing to say and at this point I can blame this one on Kallini. Numbers … forty two ... (http://hubpages.com/profile/kallini2010)"

The link from above no longer works so here's the new one: http://kallini2010.hubpages.com/. I encourage people to try some of Kallini's writing. It is rather refreshing to say the least. Cheers!

You have struck out here at the eternal dilemma for those to whom numbers matter, my friend! Numbers, in fact all manner or methods used in keeping score, tallying and or tabulating have added stress where none should exist, Mr Happy!

The impetus for one to achieve should be based on ones own real talent, Sir. It should not on the standards set by some arbitrary algorithm or the perceived popularity achieved by the keywords used.

Perhaps Each is determined in the Titles used or found in the body of the piece(s) by thosee Google bots. But like you stated who cares! If you are doing your best and the ones who follow you are entertained then you, mr happy are successful in my book!

Voted this Hub Up and Awesome, along with Useful, Funny Beautiful and Interesting!

That is how I rate it, Mr. Happy !

Regards Mike (Aka Professor M!) ;D

Mr. Professor M - those might be the nicest words anyone has ever left me on Hub-pages. I humbly bow to you. Thank you.

Mr. Dallas: whatever works Amigo! Cheers.

Mr. Mentalistacer, wise words - thank you for stopping by and commenting.

Mr. Spirit Whisperer, I am not sure how you expected me to answer your question but I must say that I am quite sure my state of mind was not any more different when I wrote this piece than it is now. What am I on now? Not much ... I've been in the kitchen cooking for about an hour or so: high on steam maybe lol

Mr. Happy - this is the most EXPECTED hub of all that I read.

True, that when I discovered (or rather expropriated) the number (MY number) 42, the ability to entertain MYSELF increased tenfold.

Meaning? This is the last thing that should bother me. "42" is like a brand.

Just a few days ago, I decided I will stop mentioning it so often - and I thought I should see what will come back:

1. Mckbirdbks, calculated (there is a formula and rather peculiar) the number of chapters for my autobiography. The answer is, of course, 42, but the beauty is IN the Formula.

2. Then, Epigramman, mentioned my favourite number.

3. And now you said that the whole hub was "inspired" by...

Meaning of numbers... Numbers have no meaning, they are used to convey the concepts, that exist only in our minds. The Universe is completely oblivious to numbers, names and words... everything works according to the laws of nature, yet nothing is "written" in a big book "Rules and Processes of Existence".

Speaking of numbers:

One of my latest hubs is based on the number "1" or rather

"111111111111111111...." - it is called "Make your creativity sparkle: do silly things".

That is what it is - just silly. But funny - for me.

Thank you for writing this piece, it was very nice to think that our thoughts influence each other.

Interesting disquisition on numbers. There is so much more peace and pleasure and well-being when you decide the HP numbers don't matter. Deep conversations, new ideas, elegiac poetry, snippets about nature and science...they matter. The numbers are incidental. I know that wsn' the main point of your soliloquy, but I got carried away.

Yes Mrs. Phdast7, I agree with you that numbers on HP often stress people out and for no good reason in my opinion.

And I am not sure if this soliloquy had a point, other than to give a sample of flying thoughts.

Cheers!
